Created by Sarah Pope and Nicole Pouliot in collaboration with the dancers of Mark Lamb Dance, “Holding It Together” will be an evening of improvised performance. From bodies leaning together for support, to the idea of “roots” and “home” as common ground, to quite literally taping performers to the stage with masking tape, “Holding It Together” takes a look at the ties that bind people together in community.
The evening will begin with a series of “blind dates” in which one dancer and one musician will be chosen on the spot to improvise a duet when their names are picked from a hat! “Holding It Together” will also feature a new duet by guest choreographer, Diane McCarthy, danced by Sarah Pope and Nicole Pouliot.
The New York Times has referred to the group’s dancers Mark Lamb, Sarah Pope, Nicole Pouliot, Deborah Gladstein and Jennifer Wilenta as “gentle, charming performers who dance just feet away from the audience.” The dancers will be joined this month by musicians Leanne Darling on viola, Marlon Cherry on guitar and kalimba, and Helen Yee on violin, harmonica and cake pan!
The evening will consist of three performance sets interwoven with breaks for wine and homemade food, conversation and participation. Held in a church where “all are welcome,” come experience the warm fellowship that makes Metro Baptist a “home” for Mark Lamb Dance and a special place for all who enter. Find out why The New York Times has called these salons “a quintessential New York experience.” Be a part of the party as a church just off Times Square transforms itself into an elegant setting for nourishing both the spirit and stomach.
Performances will be interspersed with food (much of it homemade) and wine, plus mingling between performers and audience.
