What is “ Gelsi ”? Gelsi is the Italian word for mulberries . Since their friendship first began while working together on Mulberry Street in Little Italy, partners Tony Pecora and Donato Deserio, decided to choose Gelsi for the name of their first partnership.
Tony Pecora, a well-established restaurateur, opened his first pizzeria and restaurant in 1983, named Delizia , an upper eastside favorite. He went on to open several more restaurants, with other partners, including Letizia , Ciao Europa , Delizia 92St , Trattoria Libertá , AlbaChiara , Leone’s , Corte Café , and even two bars, Bar Nine and The Door , all located in New York City. Tony, born and raised in Sicily , has always had a passion for his heritage and Italian cuisine. Donato, Gelsi’s Executive Chef, shares this same passion and together they own this unique new restaurant called ArrOsteria Gelsi . (Please take a moment to read the “About the Chef” page.)
“ArrOsteria” is a bistro type of restaurant where grilled and roasted seafood, poultry, and veal is served along with homemade and imported pasta, soups, salads, and panini (a spongy type of fresh baked bread).
What is unique about ArrOsteria Gelsi is that we specialize in savories from Puglia , also known as “ Apulia ”. Our menu features peasant and fisherman’s food and many nouvelle (novelties), as well. If you aren’t familiar with Apulian cuisine, we welcome you to be our guests and let us introduce you to the healthy dishes from this southern region. A region often referred to as unexplored and overlooked , Apulia is located at the “heel of the boot” of Italy and is known for its sunny climate and flavorful food.
